INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Internship Opportunities at Southern Tanzania Elephant Program (STEP) September 2026

The Southern Tanzania Elephant Program (STEP) is inviting applications for the following internship opportunity, based in Iringa:
1. COEXISTENCE AND LIVELIHOODS INTERN
The Coexistence and Livelihoods Intern will support the implementation of community conservation, human-elephant coexistence, livelihoods, education, and awareness activities in the Ruaha-Rungwa Landscape.

Key Responsibilities:
• Support implementation and monitoring of livelihood activities, including beekeeping, poultry, mushroom production, VSLAs, and other income-generating activities.
• Assist with human-elephant coexistence activities and community support.
• Support communication, follow-up, and data management for Local Elephant Monitors (LEMs).
• Assist with community awareness activities, film nights, training, Tembo Cup, and other outreach events.
• Support field data collection, data entry, cleaning, record keeping, and use of digital tools such as KoboCollect.
• Assist with activity reports, success stories, case studies, and project documentation.
• Support field activity planning, logistics, procurement, and documentation.
• Provide general administrative and field support to the Coexistence and Livelihoods team.

Education Qualifications
• A bachelor degree in Community development, agriculture, livelihoods, natural resources, wildlife, environmental sciences, or related fields

• Good computer and data-management skills.
• Good communication, organisation, teamwork, and report-writing skills.
• Ability to collect, enter, clean, and manage data using mobile collector.
• Willingness to work in the field and travel to remote areas.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.

2. LOCATION AND INTERNSHIP ARRANGEMENTS
The internship is primarily office-based at STEP’s offices in Iringa, with some fieldwork depending on the area of work. The intern will be provided with:
• Internship stipend
• Accommodation
• Opportunities to gain practical experience in conservation and community-based programmes

The applicant should be prepared to work in the field when required and must have access to their own laptop.
